I still remember reading a review about Firefox in Business World by Mala Bhargava some years back. At that time, browser was just a tool to surf the internet and so ubiquitous was Internet Explorer (IE) that the word web-browser was synonymous to IE. Mozilla was somewhat of a known entity at that point but Firefox was definitely not. Mala gave a list of features but the one that caught my attention was “tabs”. Opening a window in a new tab was unheard of and the idea of having all related links in the same window was really impressive. Also, clutter-free taskbar was a welcome change.
Next day, I had Firefox running on my desktop. Slick and lightweight, the experience was good to start with. Having an alternative to IE in itself was a kind of relief. Though Opera was an option, it never came out of the shell. As always, the curiosity to know a product better led me to explore the themes and extensions that were available for Firefox. I was never happy with the themes that Mozilla provided. Even now I run the default theme. The element that impressed me the most was “Add-ons”.
Firefox is no longer a web-browser for me; it is more of a utility. It is a gadget that helps me interact with the world, stay abreast with the latest happenings, filter out the unwanted stuff and undeniably increase my productivity.
